4 Ways To Protect Your EyeSight

Do you remember the last time you visited an Ophthalmologist for a detail eye checkup? We are least bothered about protecting or taking care of our eyes. We often ignore the many times we feel itchiness, blurred visions etc as we do not pay much attention to the eye problems. By taking care of our eyes, we can protect our eyes from serious eye problems such as glaucoma, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration.

4 Ways To Protect Your EyeSight

Nowadays, we all know someone who wears contact glasses because honestly there is a huge amount of the population that has some serious eyesight issues and well one should blame himself for a weak eye sight because we all spend most of our day looking at the screens of our mobile phones and laptops. The blue light coming out of those screens is literally deadly dangerous for our eyes. But on the other hand thanks to the technology that now one can easily and permanently get his eyesight fixed through lasik surgery which is also known as laser surgery. This surgery is so common now that if you search on the internet, let’s say “Lasik Singapore”, you’ll have your screen bombarded with a lot of results. So, yes you can get your eyesight fixed but again prevention is better than cure so let’s have a look at the ways through which we can protect our eyesight.

Have you heard about the 20-20 rule?

The Internet has become a big part of our lives and with the passage of time, we have started spending more & more time on smartphones & tablets. The extended exposure to screen strains the eyes causing blurred vision, headaches & dry eyes. This can be avoided by simply applying the basic 20-20 rule; look away from the screen, in at least 20 feet distance, after every 20 minutes. It may sound like a constant distraction and disturbance to your work, but it is not.  In fact, it goes a long way in protecting your eyes as they are at rest.

Sunglasses – not only a Fashion Statement but your True Friend!

Yes, people, this is not a myth that sunglasses protect our eyes! This is actually true. Sunglasses protect our eyes from direct exposure to sun’s UV rays. That is why ophthalmologists always suggest us to wear sunglasses that completely cover our eyes to avoid any eye damage. And many people, (including me) worry about an “added expense”, but they aren’t. Sunglasses do not need to be very expensive always! They can be from any local optics shop or a branded one, depending on your pocket.

Stop Smoking!

Apart from the various health issues, smoking also increases the risk of developing serious eye problems. Smoking makes the lens of the eye cloudy over time due to oxidation – leading to Cataract, resulting in blurred vision or faded colors. Similarly, smokers are also at greater risk of developing Macular Degeneration, which causes blurred visions or blind spots as the central part of the retina that helps us in perceiving minute details is deteriorated. Thus, quitting smoking cannot totally eliminate, but reduce the chances of these eye diseases.

Eat Right and Healthy!

Eating foods rich in nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin C & E have proven to keep the retina healthy, which means Healthy Eyes! Also, a well-balanced diet reduces the chances of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes (causing damage to blood vessels in the retina), which in turn can save us from the eye diseases.

Besides the above-mentioned guidelines, it is strongly advisable to get your eyes checked regularly. We seldom do that as we are least bothered about our eyes, but we should stay alert to any vision changes or symptoms and must get our eyes checked regularly to avoid any severe damages to the eyes.
